'By the bank of Kowthar, with lips parched by thirst By the side of the Beloved with heart afire by longing!"

The present collection is but a draught off the affluent stream of written and spoken words of wisdom by the sage of all times, His Holiness Imam Khomeini (s.a.). "Pithy Aphorisms, Wise Sayings and Counsels" is a compendium of the written and spoken words of a grand man who, before all else, testified to the justness of his own cause by his presence on the scene of action. All those who witnessed the movement of this divine spirit from its inception until his ascension and all those who had met him in his celestial presence have testified that no word ever left his lips or pen which he did not believe or practice wholeheartedly
Imam Khomeini (s.a.) had apprehended and experienced, when still young, the secrets of philosophy; the mys tries of Gnosticism and the blessings of religious Jurisprudence and other Islamic-principles and precepts on highest levels and standards. He has entrusted glimps of these divine visions in his invaluable works such as "The Misbahul-Hdayat" (A Guiding Light), "Serrus-salaat" (Secrets of Prayeis), "Awdawus-Salaat" (The Rituals of Prayers), "Exegesis on Forty Traditions" and i'n many other works of his on religious Jurisprudence, principles and ethics *1** Imam Khomeini (s.a.) spoke to The ummat in the manner of the Holy Quran and Tradition. His speech was simple, popular and replete with veracity and purity. This, as a matter of fact, Was the secret of the deep and wonderous effect of the Imam's word and message, which aroused peoples' natures and moved and mobilized them, in waves, to meet all dangers? And now, thanks God, four years after the ascension*2** of that sublime spirit, we witness that all over Islamic lands his lofty ideals serve as sources in which are based the rising movements and pro-Islamic activities that have emerged throughout the world as undeniable realities, realities that have frightened pagan chiefs to which they humbly confess
And now, in the 4th year of the ascension of the Imam of combatants and preceptor of gnostics, in the memory of an Imam, whose blessed hands, as tokens of the rightfulness of walayat (guardianship) and gentleness of Imamat (leadership), responded to our hearty sentiments and whose divine and charming words eased hardships and palliated pains, reassuring the hearts, who invited us to be firm and steadfast in treading the divine path, we offer the present compendium to those who follow in his path, hoping that a fresh review of his thoughts and guidelines will ease their longing pains of separation and find new insight in the sparkling fountainhead of his knowledge and insure, the more, the safety of the continuing path of the revolution by using the lessons learned from His Holiness

Rules of servitude imply that no power be recognized except that of God and none be adored but God and His Divine Saints..

The essence of praise accrues to none but God, your praise of a rose or an apple is praise of the Lord..

If your actions be not rooted in divinity and you leave Islamic unity, you will surely be ostracized..

Material Incentives may follow divine purposes but they are no longer material, they become divine..

A criterion for distinguishing divine from devil is in minding the action and not the doer..

Mindfulness of God, migrating from oneself to God - (which is the greatest migration)-, migration from ego to truth, and from this world to the Invisible, have all fortified you..

Next to trusting the Lord, trust your own strength which is of Him.

Fear none, I tell you, save God and count on none but Him!

Concern with that which is not of God shall enshroud us in a veil of darkness.

Neglecting God tarnishes the heart more, gives the ego and devil domination over man and daily increases corruption. Recitation and remembrance of imparts serenity to the heart, burnishes it and makes it a mirror reflectin Beloved. It purges and purifies the soul and saves the man from the boi of ego.

and know this: no fire is more painful than the burning wrath of God.

Just as it is incumbent on us to protect and bring ourselves from darkn light, SO it is our duty to invite others do the same.

We must enjoin (others) not to the ego, not to the worldly things, but to

If man rises for carnal passions, and not for God, he wont get anywh will be done for nothing that is not for God can survive.

Make your purpose a divine purpose, let your steps be taken for God.

All the world is God's presence, whatever takes place, takes place presence of God.

The face of action is not the scale, the incentive to act is the scale.

Every obligated adult on earth is tested and tried by the Lord.

The status and position one holds and any responsibility he has, are his test and trial.

The Pleasure of God is the criterion in Islam, not persons. We measure persons by truth and not truth by persons. The criterion is justness and truth.

We should adopt divine criteria.

Wake up, nation, wake up government, wake up all! You are all in God's presence. Tomorrow, you will be called to account. Do not ignore the blood of our martyrs, and do not fight for position or status.

The universe is God's presence, do not sin in His presence. Do not quarrel over false and mortal things in His presence. Work for God's sake and advance.

Right now we are all placed under tests and are being examined.

Man may conceal things from all mortal eyes but everyting about us is preserved with God and He reverts to us all our deeds.

Invoke Almighty God for, God willing, it will solve all difficulties.

All of our divine duties are blessings of God but we think they are obligations.

We must all be servants to God and know that everything is from Him.

God has granted us all His blesSingS and we must spend in His path the th He has granted.

We are all from God and must all be in His service.

That whjCh eases calamities is the fact that all are departing mortals. We i all go, so, better we all be sacrificed in His path.

All that each and ever/ one of us has is from God, we must spend all strength for Him.

Prophets came to put the potential forces to work, to render man's pote active.

The Prophets, one and all, made every effort to invite this creature (m the Straight Path and make him tread therein.

Prophetic mission aims at saving men's conducts, souls, and bodies darkness; to remove all darkness and replace it with light.

Great God's praise and salaam to Hazrat Esau (Jesus) son of Mary, the Spirit of God and His Grand Messenger who revived the dead and awakened the slumbering ones. God's praise and salaam to his noble mother, Maryam (Mary) who, by divine breath, gave such a great child to those who thirst for God's mercy.

(Addressed to priests): To please the Lord and carry out the decree of Jesus, let the bells in your churches peal once in favor of the oppressed Iranians, and in condemnation of the oppressors.

The essential business of the prophets has been to subdue, as much as possible, this self-love and to harness the egos.

We seek what is best for the society; we are followers of prophets who have come to reform the society, to lead the society to happiness.

If all prophets gather up in one place, they'll never quarrel with one another.

If all prophets (SAW) would come together at one time, they would not differ about anything.

The prophets were not to take up the sword except against those for whom the sword was the cure, otherwise they would corrupt the conununity.

The logic of prophets calls for roughness towards the pagans and those who are against mankind, and for kindness to friends and kins. That roughness, too, is mercy.

The prophets felt pity for the pagans, for the hypocrites, and wondered why they are as they are.

At the start of their mission, the prophets first confronted the upper class, His Holiness Moses, confronted the Pharaoh. The upper class enjoy the priority of being confronted and guided first.

Islam iS the highest school. Islam is more pure than all other schools j world.

We want an Islamic Republic so that Islamic laws may be realized in it.

An Islamic Republic is one in which the laws are Islamic.

The Republic is Islamic and all things relating to us must become Islamic.

Today, the Country is an Islamic country therefore its contents must Islamic as well

We are after the realization of Islam. we are not after the name only and say it is enough that are called "Islamic Republic".

You who have risen for Islam, who sacrifice your lives and properties, are in the ranks of the Martyrs of Karbata because you follow their ideology.

If Islam be layed out as it really is and as God Almighty has established it, it will be recognized as the conqueror of colonizers.

The great prophet of Islam sacrificed his all for Islam until he hoisted the banner of monotheism, as his followers we should dedicate our all to keep that banner hoisted.

We must all get under the banner of Islam but not by way of pretension, but honestly and truthfully.

If divine tenets be established in a nation, falsehood will leave that nation.

We can be invulnerable to and oppose great powers when we be dedicated to Islam and its decrees.

Make every effort to practice Islamic rules and make others practice them as well.

If, God forbid, some harm comes to Islam, all of us stand guilty because of it.

Do not keep saying "I", say "my faith!"

He who works for God, and rises for God, should not fear a thing.

Without the Quran the gate to the knowledge of God would be shut for ever!

The Quran is the man-making book, Islam is the man-making ideology-man in all his dimensions.

It is the Quran that guides us to the lofty purposes to which we intuitively turn, unaware.

Do not neglect association with the Holy Quran, this divine book of light because whatever the Muslims have had in the past and may have in the future is by the grace of this sacred book.

As a matter of fact Islam - (Shiism being nothiut the real, original Islam) not only does not prevent the scientific and intellectual growth of mankind, rather, it prepares ground for these moves and imparts to them humane and divine direction. The scientific and cultural evolution in the wake of Islam's advent has all but stunned investigators.

What is most regrettable is that they did not let His Holliness Amir (a title of Au (a.s.)) become manifest as he should and as Islam had wanted.

The Tragic event that befell Amirulmumenin (lit., the Master of the Faithful, a title of Imam Au (a.s.)) and Islam is greater than that which befell the Seyyed-al-Shohada (lit., the Master of the martyrs, a title of His Holliness Imam Hosein).

The prophets did not succeed in carrying out their missions and Almighty God will send someone (12Th. Infallible Imam) to implement them at the end of time.

You must remember that all of us have another day, (the Last Day), do not doubt this! We have a day of reckoning before us. Everything will be considered and calculated on that day, man himself should give an account of his doings. On that day, pens, hands, eyes, all come and testify. We have such a day!

Each act we perform here has two states, a purgatory and a heavenily state, and, to this we arrive.

Each letter and word that issues forth from us will be reflected in the scale of oUT deeds, in the Hereafter.

The scale of our deeds is with God, everything is and will be recorded.

In this world the intercession of the pre-emptors becomes manifest by their guidaflce in the Hereafter, the essence of guidance is intercession per se. If your portion of guidance is nil, you shall receive no intercession; to the extent you receive guidance, you'll receive intercession.

Cultivate your egos, purge them. This world has a definite end for all of us, for me sooner, then for you.
